Roma at risk

Silvio Berlusconi wastes no time. Italy has expelled 100 people after a sweep of immigrant squatter encampments, The New York Times reports.

See also: BBC and The Guardian.

The Guardian reports that the cabinet endorsed a new law that allows "confiscation of property let to illegal immigrants, a rule that could have instant and drastic effects on hundreds of thousands of foreigners known to be living in Italy without the right papers."

[a tip of the hat to Gabriel for pointing me to the links.]

I am an italian activist of Democratic party (bourn by the union of Democrats of the Left and Daisy Party) and without any doubt the immigration linked to the racquet were 2 main topics in the last electoral campaign in my Country.
Prodi Government was not so politically cohesive to create an effective legislation and to offer a real means of integration to the people coming in Italy to work.
There are many responsabilities also in the industrial associations because they didn't want to help government and other religious and humanitarian association to create a good labour market, decent houses for the immigrants...
Although he is not of my political party, I think that Interior Ministry Roberto Maroni isn't so populist and hellhound like other members of Northern League...
We also have to consider the position of Catholic Churc...

Delighted to discover this blog. I am a squatters and slum-dwellers activist in Calcutta (or Kolkata). Serendipity! Would like to be in communication brother.
